In this assignment, each student was assigned a block to make a gasket for. The first part of the assignment was making a dimensioned sketch of the block.
We were then asked to cad the gasket and put it into Gibbs Cam to be machined by a CNC mill. I used Solidworks to cad the gasket and was led by EPIC staff members through converting it into G code in Gibbs Cam.
I then took the code to the CNC machine and had the gasket machined. I cleaned up the part and brought it to class to see if it could be used as a gasket.
The final gasket did not fit over the two pins and was in fact not very accurate to the block. The measurements were off most likely due to human error. I could have read the calipers wrong or positioned them incorrectly when taking my measurements resulting in an inaccurate gasket. The measurements were accurate to the rectangular holes but not to the circle holes, the screw holes, and the pins.
These mistakes can be prevented in the future by checking over the measurements multiple times and comparing the dimensioned sketch to the object more diligently.
